The type of ant treatment we carry out depends on the species present, the location of the problem and the size of the problem. We have indoor ant treatments, external ant treatments and treatments for lawn ants. In most cases the ant problem is outside, with the ants coming inside looking for food or water.

If ants are coming in from outside, we focus on treating external areas of the building (to stop them coming in). This involves using a specialist ant spray around the perimeter of the building and around entry points. Sometimes we may need to do spot treatments inside around entry points and areas of high activity.

Sometimes the ants are actually nesting inside the house, often in the roof cavity or walls voids. In such cases we will use ant baits and specialist ant sprays to eliminate the nest.

For ant problems which are solely outside the building, for example in pavers, we will use a combination of ant sprays, ant baits and ant granules. This is particularly the case with coastal brown ants, which can infest large areas and dig up the dirt between pavers.

Green head ants are a common problem in lawns. They deliver a painful bite which can itch for several days. To get rid of biting ants from lawns we use a combination of sprays and baits. The lawn needs to be mown the day before we arrive so we can inspect for nests and ensure the treatment hits the mark!

If the ants come back, so do we. Professional-grade results, guaranteed.

With our spray treatments, you should see a significant drop in activity immediately, with activity generally ceasing over a day or two. Our spray treatments don’t necessarily kill the nest, they are designed to suppress the ant population and prevent ants coming into the house.

For bait treatments it can take 3 or more days to completely eliminate the nest. This is a permanent solution to your ant problem.

The duration of protection depends on the species of ant present and the level of infestation in the area.

How long ant control lasts depends on the species of ant, the location of the problem and level of infestation.

For ant nest inside the building, our treatments are designed to kill the nest to provide a permanent solution to your ant problem.

For ant problems outside, the ant treatment will only last for a period of time (we provide a 6-month warranty). Over time the treatment wears off, and ants will re-invade from the surrounding areas.

Some ant species, such as the black house ant build a single nest with a single queen. These nests can be completely eliminated. Other ants such as the Argentine ant and coastal brown ant build massive colonies with multiple queens over whole neighbourhoods. It is not possible to kill these colonies (nests) – it’s a question of suppressing the population on your property and keeping them out of the house. Regular (annual) treatments are often required.

To control ants in the kitchen we need to work out where they are coming from – whether they are coming in from outside or whether there is a nest inside the house. If they are coming in from outside an external spray, in particular around the entry points, is a key part of the treatment. If there is a nest inside, locating the nest and using ant baits are critical to success. Eliminating food sources is important to make the kitchen less attractive to ants and other pets.

Ant baits are a really smart way to eliminate an ant nest, especially if you don’t know where it is! Ant baits consist of an attractive ant food and slow acting insecticide. Foraging ants take the bait back to the nest where it is fed to the nest mates including the queen(s). It’s slow acting so it has time to be spread around the nest before it starts to take effect.

As long as enough bait is applied for the size of nest in question, the nest will be eliminated in 3-7 days. As different ants have different food preferences, it is also important to select the best bait for the species concerned.

Apart from having an ant pest control treatment to keep ants out of the house, there are some key actions homeowners can take to minimise the chances of an ant invasion:

  • Block off any obvious cracks and ant entry points
  • Keep the kitchen clean
    • Don’t leave dirty dishes out
    • Clean up food spills
    • Keep the cooker and grill clean
    • Keep food in sealed containers
  • Keep garbage in sealed bins
  • Don’t leave uneaten petfood out
Mutliple Black Ants
Black house ants feeding on liquid

Black house ants are dull black ant about 2.5mm long. The black house ant builds nests in and around buildings. They build a single nest with a single queen, which makes them quite easy to eliminate with an ant bait. They generally like sugar-based foods. They do not bite or sting.

Coastal brown ant

Coastal brown ants are a red brown ant. The workers are a variable size, but generally small workers (2mm) and large workers (4.5mm). The large workers have oversized heads, which gives rise to their other common name, the big-headed ant. They typically nest outside under pavers, rocks and logs. They can develop massive colonies spread across several properties, containing many queens. Although parts of the colony can be eliminated with baits and sprays, it is generally impossible to eliminate the whole colony, and any treated area will eventually be re-invaded. They generally go for oil based foods and seeds. The coastal brown ant does have a mild sting but it isn’t painful to humans and it does not bite.

Argentine ants in pavers

The Argentine ant is a dull brown ant up to 3mm long. The typically nest outdoor on the surface of the soil – under sheeting, obstacles and leaf litter. They have very mobile nests. Like the big-headed ant, they can develop into large “super colonies” covering whole neighbourhoods. With multiple nests containing hundreds of queens, it is impossible to eliminate the colony. They will eat both protein based foods (especially pet food) and sugar based foods. Treatment is designed to suppress numbers and keep them out of buildings. They do not sting but have a mild bite.
