Termite protection measures are incorporated into the building during the construction process. It is typically a combination of the physical aspects of the construction combined with termite protection products to protect weak points (potential termite entry points). Whereas a well designed termite protection system will prevent unseen termite entry, annual termite inspections are still required to make sure termites aren’t getting around the protection measures and indeed if the termite protection measures are still working or haven’t been compromised. If you are carrying out renovations or extensions, termite protection also needs to be considered.

Annual termite inspections are essential for all homeowners in Perth, whether you have termite protection in place or not. The inspection will spot any termite activity on the property, check for the integrity of any termite protection measure or termite treatments, and importantly, identify any conditions or building issues that may make a termite attack more likely.

Termite treatments are required on existing homes if the house comes under termite attack. The treatment has two parts, the first to eliminate termites from the building and the second to prevent future termite attack. There are two types of termite treatment that provide lasting protection – soil treatments and termite baiting systems.

A pre-purchase timber pest inspection or simply “pest inspection” should be booked for any property you are considering to purchase or bid on at auction. The inspection will report on termite, borer and timber decay activity and damage, the status of any termite protection in place, as well as any conditions or building faults that may make a timber pest attack more likely.

The best way to make your home less attractive to termites is make the ground around and under your house as dry as possible and to eliminate potential food source:

  • Make sure there are no leaking taps or gutters
  • Make sure taps, drainpipes, hot water tank and air conditioning overflows, all go to a drain
  • Don’t install a watering system around the perimeter of the building
  • Avoid using wood mulch around the perimeter of the building
  • Don’t have dense garden beds around the perimeter of the building
  • Keep firewood stored away from the building and not in contact with the ground

The main type of termites found in Perth are called subterranean termites. As their name suggests, they spend most of their time underground. For most species their nests are hidden under ground, although some build a visible mound above ground and a few actually build nests high up in trees (although these are still connected to the ground to access moisture).

Most of the time they build their tunnels underground from their nest to a food source. However, when the need to come above ground they will build mud tubes to protect themselves from predators and drying out. Often the appearance of mud tubes is the first sign you might have termites.

There are three species of termite that cause most of the damage to house in Perth – Coptotermes, Heterotermes and Nasutitermes. Each of these termites have different biology and behaviours. If you home is being attacked by termites, it is important to identify the species present as it can impact the type of termite treatment required.

Termites are often called “white ants” as they look superficially like an ant, but actually they are more closely related to cockroaches! In the termite nest there are different types of termite – different castes – which have different roles in the colony. However, for homeowners, it is probably most important to know what the worker termite looks like, how it is different to an ant and what flying termites look like?

Worker Termites

Termite workers are the most numerous caste in the colony and do most of the worker – they certainly cause all the damage. Termite workers are a pale white creamy colour, with six legs, no eyes and straight antennae. The size of the worker can vary depending on species and event within a colony but typically they are between 4 – 10 mm long.

worker termites vs ants

Although termites are sometimes called “white ants” they are actually quite easy to tell apart, based on 4 characteristics:

  • Colour: Termites are a pale white colour; ants are black or brown
  • Eyes: Termite workers are blind; ants have obvious eyes
  • Antennae: Termites have straight antennae; ants have antennae with an obvious bend or elbow
  • Waist: Termites do not have an obvious waist given the appearance of 2 body segments; ants have an obvious waist creating 3 obvious body segments

From a behavioural point of view, ants are generally quite happy walking around in the open, termites tend to remain hidden underground, in the wood they are feeding on or in their mud shelter tubes.

soldier termite

Termite soldiers provide the defence for the colony. They are slightly larger than the workers, have darker coloured heads and often modified jaws for protection. The shape of the head and jaws are used to help identify the species of termite (as worker termites all look quite similar).

Termite queen

The termite queen is the most important termite in the colony, producing all the eggs – if she dies the colony dies. Some species have more than one queen and some can produce replacement queens. Mature queens can become very large as they produce thousands of eggs per day!

Flying termite

Flying termites, also called alates, are the reproductive termites – the new kings and queens. Flying termites are released in large numbers from mature colonies on warm humid nights. They are a brown colour with obvious eyes and two pairs of equal sized wings. When the flying termites land, they shed their wings pair up with a partner and walk off to find a location to start a new nest.

If you spot flying termites around  your home or large piles of wings on the ground when you get up in the morning, it means there is a large termite nest nearby and you should get your house inspected immediately.

Termite nymphs (termite babies)

Termite babies or termite nymphs are the young termites. These younger termites generally stay in the nest, often in the central part of the nest or “nursery”. They look like worker termites only smaller and whiter in colour.
