Generally speaking, we offer two types of cockroach treatment, one for large cockroach species (our standard cockroach treatment) and one for small cockroach species, such as the annoying German cockroach.

Large cockroach species, such as the American cockroach and Australian cockroach, typically live outside, around buildings and only come inside looking for food or simply by accident. Our standard cockroach treatment targets these large cockroach species and is designed to reduce their numbers around the house and prevent them coming inside.

The main feature of the treatment is a comprehensive spray around the perimeter of the building, also targeting entry points and breeding sites (such as garbage bins). Crack and crevices which are common harbourages will be treated with spray or insecticide dust. Sometimes the roof void will also be treated with insecticide dust if required.

In addition to the treatment, it is important to follow our recommended guidance on hygiene measures to maximise the duration of protection provided by our treatment and minimise the chances of a future cockroach problem.

German cockroaches and the similar brown banded cockroach only live inside. If you have a German cockroach problem, you have probably introduced them into your home by accident (for example in a cardboard box). If you’re in a unit, it is possible they entered from a neighbouring unit.

Before we start our treatment, we carry out a comprehensive inspection to identify the source of the infestation and all the cockroach hiding places. We use a combination of baits, dust and specialist cockroach sprays. As German cockroaches are a challenging pest to control, we plan on a two-treatment visit, 6-8 weeks apart. Normally the second visit is to confirm eradication, but sometimes a spot treatment is required if a hiding spot was missed.

In addition to the treatment, it is important to carry out any hygiene measures we recommend. If food and dirty dishes are left around, it provides plenty of food for cockroaches. Not only does this allow the cockroach population to grow rapidly, but it can also make it more difficult to gain control. For example, if there is lots of easily accessed food available, cockroaches may be less likely to eat any cockroach bait.

Typically, we offer a 3-month warranty on our standard cockroach treatments. Although we guarantee we will eliminate your German cockroach problem, we do not offer a long-term warranty on German cockroach treatments, as it is possible for them to easily be re-introduced immediately after elimination (eg. inside a cardboard box).

With our spray and dust treatments, cockroaches will die shortly after contacting the treatment, so you are likely to see dead cockroaches even before we have left! In the 24 hours after our treatment, you are likely to see a number of dead cockroaches. Our treatments leave a residual treatment on the surface of treated areas, which will kill any cockroaches moving into the area for a number of months.

If we use cockroach bait treatments, which is common for German cockroaches or in areas where spraying isn’t suitable, it will take a couple of days before you start to see dead cockroaches and up to 2 weeks before the population has been eliminated. See “How does cockroach bait work?” for more information.

Controlling German cockroach infestations can be tricky, even for professional pest managers, which is why we don’t recommend trying DIY German cockroach treatments. Success in controlling German cockroaches is achieved by identifying all the hiding places (this is difficult as they are so small and so there are plenty of places they can hide). It is then important to the apply the appropriate product in the right locations. This requires access to specialist products (which are not available in supermarkets) as well as expert knowledge.

Cockroach baits consist of an attractive cockroach food and slow acting insecticide. Foraging cockroaches feed on the bait, but it takes hours before it has an effect and can take a day or more to kill an individual cockroach. These cockroaches go back to their hiding place after feeding. When they start to feel ill, they vomit and poop. Small amounts of the insecticide are in their vomit and their droppings.

This is where the clever and gross action of cockroach baits kick in! Young cockroaches (nymphs) tend not to leave their hiding place, but feed on the droppings (and vomit) of other cockroaches. As a result, they will feed on the insecticide loaded vomit and droppings. In this way the cockroach bait is spread through the population, affecting even the cockroaches back in the harbourage. Depending on the size of the infestation it can take up to 2 weeks to eliminate the infestation.

Theoretically cockroaches can spread disease, but actual proof or scientific studies demonstrating that cockroaches have actually caused illness in humans is lacking. However, cockroaches certainly carry a wide range of microbes that are pathogens to humans.

Many of them impact the digestive system, such Salmonella and E. coli. They can transit these diseases as they walk over food preparation surfaces, cutlery and crockery, and feed on human food. They are also known to carry hepatitis A.

In addition, their droppings and their spent skins carry proteins that can cause significant allergic reactions and asthma.

Apart from having a cockroach pest control treatment to keep cockroaches out of the house, there are some key actions homeowners can take to minimise the chances of cockroaches entering the house and starting an infestation:

  • Block off any obvious cracks and entry points
  • Keep the kitchen clean
    • Don’t leave dirty dishes out
    • Clean up food spills
    • Keep the cooker and grill clean
    • Keep food in sealed containers
  • Keep garbage in sealed bins
  • Don’t leave uneaten petfood out
  • Make sure there are no leaking pipes or taps – cockroaches love water
American cockroach
Australian cockroach

The Australian cockroach is a large cockroach up to 35mm long. It is dark red / brown with pale markings around the pronotum (behind the head) and along the top edge of the wings. It is a peridomestic cockroach, which means it lives and around buildings, predominantly outside in leaf litter, drains, sewers and garbage areas. However, it does like sub-floors and roof voids and will come inside looking for food and water.

American cockroach

The American cockroach very similar to the Australian cockroach, but maybe slightly longer (40mm) and lacking the pale markings of the Australian cockroach. It is also found in similar locations to the Australian cockroach, in leaf litter, drains, sewers and garbage. It also like sub-floors and roof voids and will come inside looking for food and water.

German cockroach

The German cockroach is a small cockroach – adults are only 15 mm long and nymphs as small as 2-3 mm. It is a pale brown colour, with adults having two dark brown vertical stripes on the pronotum, behind the head. It only lives inside buildings, primarily in areas where it can get both food and water, ie. Kitchens. It hides in any small crack and crevice, including door hinges, dishwashers and electrical equipment.
